On an adventure in Overijssel
Forests, hills and picturesque villages.... The Van der Wagt family ended up in an oasis of peace during a vacation in Overijssel. ,,By pure coincidence we ended up at Landgoed Kattenbergse Hoeve in Markelo. A beautiful natural campground that we would normally never have chosen," says mother Marlies. What did the family of six experience during a vacation in their own country?
Oasis of calm
Rolling hills, magnificent castles and beautiful cycling and hiking routes? Camping Landgoed Kattenbergse Hoeve is rustically located and has been attracting action lovers for years, including the van der Wagt family. Because the family went out in the early season, it was still nice and quiet on the camping field. We chose a tent with private sanitary facilities. This allowed us to camp at a campsite in the Netherlands before June 15. That was great, because we really needed to get away from it all. And the nice thing was; our oldest daughter of 19 also came to visit us in Markelo!"
Er op-uit tijdens Pinksteren
,,Every year in the May vacation we go away for a midweek or weekend. Actually we planned to camp at the North Holland coast, but this campsite turned out to be fully booked. Fortunately, we were able to divert to a beautiful nature campsite in the east of the country, with a swimming pool and a restaurant. Extraordinary, because we normally never go on vacation in Overijssel! The last time was eighteen years ago..."
'Private pool'
Upon arrival at the campsite, they were pleasantly surprised. "It is particularly nice to rediscover the 'other side' of the Netherlands. Wonderful the peace and space, you just recharge your batteries!" Due to the coronavirus, special rules apply at camping the Kattenbergse Hoeve. ,,During our vacation there was enough space for everyone at the campsite and fortunately the swimming pool and restaurant were also open. Our teenagers played badminton, we had game nights and we all went for a coffee in the camping restaurant," Marlies says.
,,In the outdoor pool, a maximum of sixteen people were allowed to swim at the same time. When we were there, only one family was swimming in the pool. It was more like a private pool!" Because each family had plenty of room and stayed on the same side, Marlies says it was "pretty easy" to stay within a meter and a half of each other.
On adventure
On a sunny day, the family put on their hiking boots for an adventurous walk through Markelo, with steep inclines and beautiful panoramas. ,,We were especially curious about the surroundings, because almost everything was new to us. Along the way we walked over hills, saw green meadows and walked along the water. After one of our teenagers had to sneeze because of the plumes of reeds at the water's edge, the fun was over. But when we came across an ice cream shop a little later and ordered a nice ice cream, everything was fine again!", Marlies says with a smile. They also explored the area by bicycle. ,,We also cycled twenty kilometers through Markelo and its surroundings, a beautiful area! We were really pleasantly surprised.¨
Summer sounds
As temperatures soared above 25 degrees during the vacation, the Van der Wagt family was mostly outdoors. That suited us fine, because with five to six adults in the Grand Lodgetent II, we needed all the space we could get," says Marlies with a wink. ,,In our ´parents´ bedroom, equipped with a double bed, it did not ventilate well. ,,You could remedy this with air conditioning. That is already done in many southern countries and we like it very much," she says as a tip.
,,So you can get away from it all in the Netherlands, although we also like to travel through Spain and Croatia. If the weather allows, we pack our bags for a wonderful vacation in southern Europe! The radiant weather, surprising dishes and the sound of crickets really remind me of summer...¨
